Whilst we can celebrate the fact that our industry is made up of around 75% women, less than 20% of these women hold top level positions. Here at Top Banana we think that’s astonishing and more needs to be done to achieve gender balance across all countries, industries and businesses.
That’s why we’re big supporters of International Women’s day and their 2019 theme Balance for Better. Balance is not a women’s issue, it’s a business issue; research consistently shows that more diverse organisations where people feel able to be themselves, consistently perform better.
Our Operations Director, Jade Ball, who is part of the industry recognised Fast Forward 15 programme is a true ambassador at Top Banana for balance in the events industry.
“In our industry we’re lucky to have programmes such as Fast Forward 15 that are actively trying to address gender balance in our industry. These programmes are so important, as it’s all about giving women opportunities to be the best they can be and motivate them and support them to make it to more senior positions within businesses. It’s not female domination – it’s female empowerment, as with around 75% of the industry being female but less than 20% in top level positions, alongside a staggering 8.6% gender pay gap in the UK, it’s evident we need to do more for women, help them achieve their ambitions and move towards a gender balanced boardroom.”
Jemma Peers, Commercial Director, at Top Banana contributes “Here at Top Banana 5 out of the 7 board members are women and whilst that’s rare in most businesses it’s something we’re super proud of. We’ve all got to these positions not because of our gender but as a result of our hard work, commitment and quite simply being good at what we do.”
Polly Stobinski, Marketing Manager at Top Banana concludes “It’s so important for young women to see that other women in the industry have made it to board level. Seeing a balanced board room at Top B really inspires the rest of the team to work hard and encourages us to keep pushing for our career goals. Having positive role models within a business, both men and women, is crucial for business success.”
