Design Academy student makes the grade.

As part of our ambition to nurture creative talent and help students prepare for a career in the creative industries, we’ve partnered with The University of Wolverhampton for the second year in our Design Academy initiative.

After the very high standard set last year, this year’s students had a lot to live up to … and they didn’t disappoint!

The first student to win the opportunity to work alongside our design team here at Top B was Georgia Cox. Here’s her view of what the experience has taught her.

How did you find the live project?

It was great to have the opportunity to contribute to a live project. It allowed me to be really creative and gave me first hand experience of what it’s like working to real deadlines.

I was a bit nervous at first but I felt more confident as the process continued and ended up being pretty relaxed. I kept referring back to Dave to get feedback on aspects of the work as I developed my ideas, which was very useful.

Have you enjoyed your placement?

I’ve done some freelance work, but nothing comparable to the Top Banana environment. This placement gave me a real insight into how the design world works from start to finish. I also learned how important the relationship is between all the departments.

What kind of projects have you been working on?

I’ve been working on a pitch. It was really exciting. I was doing Vector illustrations … basically creating the elements that go into making an animated sequence.

Has anything surprised you?

The Experience at top banana has made me realise the importance of teamwork and how collaborating with peers can help make an idea work.

Did you find the portfolio review worthwhile?

The portfolio review was really useful. Having feedback from an employer on how to present my work gave me a much better idea of what clients like to see as well as having the opinion from a design perspective. The whole experience has helped build my confidence in what I’m creating and has taught me not to doubt myself and the thinking behind my design.

More students will be joining us for work experience throughout the summer so keep your eyes peeled for updates.
